Cake or Bread?

We like our cake, don’t we? A birthday. A baby or wedding shower. Even just a Saturday morning… okay, maybe not. We generally save cake for special occasions because a steady diet of it would be unhealthy.

But food like bread, that we need daily. We need solid food that will sustain us if we are stay strong and be able to do the tasks given us to the best of our abilities.

Our approach to digesting the Word of God should be much the same.

As you ponder the idea of scripture as bread for daily use, consider what God himself has to say on the topic.

“Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (John 16:32-35)

“But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4)

“For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.” (John 16:55-59)

Do you feast on bread the bread of life every day?
