Traveling Through the Psalms – PSALM 1

In between our studies focusing on our 2013 theme of Love Revealed and our continuing focus on A Wise Woman Builds, we’re going to also travel through the Psalms. We’ll progress through at whatever pace the Spirit decides for however long He leads.

Please Read: Psalm 1

Scenario 1: A lush, green forest. Tall, majestic trees. Roaring river.

Scenario 2: A dry, hot field. No water. Seemingly endless.

Can you even imagine a reason to choose Scenario 2 over Scenario 1? Dry over refreshing? Lifeless over lush? Yet, many people choose Scenario 2 in their spiritual lives day in and day out.

Psalm 1 sets the tone for the rest of the book by presenting these two scenarios. We can choose between the two paths presented, and that choice will make all the difference not just in how the Psalms resonate in your spirit but in how God’s Word as a whole along with how His Spirit live and move within you.

Scenario 1: “Like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season without fail. Their leaves never wither, and in all they do, they prosper.” (v. 3)

Scenario 2: “…like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind.” (v. 4)Wheat background

How do we choose one scenario over another?

  • By the advice we accept
  • By the company we keep
  • By the attitude we adopt
  • By our obedience or lack thereof
  • By being nourished or drained
  • By bearing fruit or remaining dry

Yes, the choices we make in every area of life place us either under God’s protection or outside of it.

“For the Lord watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.” (v. 6)

The book of Psalms presents a lot of themes that connect and intertwine. One of those themes involves the path of life, which always involves a choice. As we study the Psalms, consider this choice and realize that there’s always a path He’s pointing too and many He’s not.
